How to Move Without a Destination
The perfect real estate transaction includes reasonably-timed settlements at both your old home and your dream home. Since the world is far from perfect, you may find your current home sells faster than you can find a new one. This could leave you in a difficult spot with a lot of uncertainty.
With these unavoidable circumstances, we’ll teach you the smartest ways to relocate when you don’t have a destination. Let’s get started!
Step One: Find Temporary Housing
The first step is to find temporary housing – or a home between homes. The type of living arrangement you’ll need depends on how long it takes for you to find or move into your permanent residence. A few options available to you are:
- Friends and Family
- Hotels
- Homestays
- Short or Long-Term Rentals
Once you determine where you’ll go interim, you’ll need to figure out what to do with your furniture. You can ask your mover to drop off essentials to your temporary housing. You’ll also need to consider your budget.
Step Two: Research Storage
A rental or a family member’s garage might be large enough to hold your belongings. Otherwise, you’ll have to consider storage solutions. Most reputable moving companies offer two types of storage:
- Hold Overnight
- Long-term storage
Talk to a moving coordinator to see what option is best for you. In most instances, your goods can only be held on their trucks for a few days. Long-term storage, especially climate-controlled, will protect your belongings from the elements.
Step Three: Hire a Mover
Since time isn’t on your side, make sure to find a reputable moving company. Ask for their availability before you start scheduling estimates.
Find out the extra services they offer and get a cost estimate. You might not have enough time to finish your packing. Some moving companies also offer disposal services for unwanted items you can’t sell on time.
Step Four: Find Your Forever Home
If you didn’t find a new place during these steps, now is the perfect time to start your search. Since you’re relatively settled, you can take your time and find the home of your dreams.
After you find a permanent residence and make settlement, you can take extra time to clean/replace flooring, paint and personalize upgrades. These tasks will be easier without furniture. Call your mover and schedule your delivery once you’re satisfied with turning your house into a home.
